California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act

SB 464 “California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act” was signed into law by Governor Newsom in October of 2019 and aims to decrease Black maternal deaths.

What does it mean for you, your family, and community:

  • This law requires that physicians complete evidence-based implicit bias training at least every 2 years. It also requires hospitals to let patients know their rights to be treated fairly and without discrimination and where to file a complaint if they feel this right has been violated.

Why this should matter to you:

  • Addressing racism and discrimination is an important step toward improving pregnancy and birthing outcomes for Black families. Implicit bias training helps physicians identify ways they may be unknowingly treating Black patients differently. As patients, we can help hold hospitals accountable to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

How you can access benefit/resources:

  • In the event you feel you have been treated unfairly at a hospital, they are required to provide you information on how to file a complaint.
