Black Health Equity Advocacy Week (BHEAW) 2024 was a success!
BHEAW was established last year with a resolution (click here to view the press release) led by Assemblymember Akilah Weber, M.D. (D-San Diego) and championed by the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC). The resolution established, for the first time, a statewide focus on the urgent need to address the health disparities gap for Black Californians.
May 6-10, 2024 , CBHN led a series of advocacy events and communications activities aimed at elevating awareness, fostering dialogue, and galvanizing action to address the pervasive health disparities disproportionately impacting the Black community.
On May 6-7, participants from the CBHN Health Equity Advocacy Training (HEAT) Program kicked off the week by visiting legislative offices in Sacramento on a mission to make their voices heard and to advocate for change on behalf of their communities. Highlights from these visits included conversations with Assemblymembers Mia Bonta, Mike Gipson, and Lori Wilson, and Senator Nancy Skinner to name a few.
As a capstone to the week, CBHN hosted a private VIP reception to celebrate the one-year anniversary of this important resolution, as well as the graduation of the second cohort of HEAT Program. Key government officials, legislators, and community partners gathered to celebrate the first ever statewide resolution in the nation to uplift community-based advocacy to advance Black Health Equity. At the event, Dr. Akilah Weber, the CLBC champion of the BHEAW Resolution, applauded CBHN, and other partners in the health equity charge, for working to move the needle in closing the gap in health disparities.
We encourage you to continue to spread the word and engage your community in collective efforts to rewrite our health story here in California.
Remember, We’ve Got the Power to:
- Reclaim our health
- Rewrite our health story
- Change health policy
- Change the narrative and
- Make the healthcare system work better for us
